Though this restriction is more generous than those of some of its competitors, it's still not ideal. Also, the trial version lets you convert or merge only five minutes of a movie. However, the help files are not built right into the interface, and you'll only find a small FAQ on the developer's site. The application displays conversion results in real time and offers a basic player for previewing clips. The tabbed interface couldn't be simpler, but it's gray and unattractive. If you choose the MPEG output format, you'll be able to tweak such elements as the frame rate and the clip size. You'll also find a tool for joining and splitting multiple video clips, though we should note that the latter tool isn't as easy to use as some other chopping utilities we've tested. As its name indicates, Easy AVI/VCD/DVD/MPEG Converter batch-converts video files to and from the most popular video formats. A few complaints aside, we think this utility for working with video clips makes an all-around satisfactory choice.
